Rotary Club of Guelph
Dream Home Lottery Rules

What are my odds of winning?

Compared to many other lotteries – GREAT! Only 7,500 tickets will be sold, so your $100 investment has at least a 1 in 7,500 chance for a $573,000 Dream Home in one of Guelph’s best new neighbourhoods AND you could win one of 116 Early Bird prizes.

Is 1 in 7,500 good odds?

The odds in similar lotteries are not nearly as favourable at about 1 in 100,000.

Can I buy a ticket on the Web?

Sorry. Lottery rules won’t allow that, but you can order and pay by credit card toll free at 1-888-750-8217 or print off the ticket application and mail it in with payment.

Can I see the Dream Home before I buy?

Starting April 12th, 2008, you are welcome to tour this year’s Dream Home at 37 Sweeney Dr. in Guelph and even buy a ticket right then and there.

If I win, can I take cash instead of the home?

Sorry. You must take possession of the home within three weeks of the draw, but you are free to put it up for sale. Once you win, it’s yours! Capital gains tax will be negligible if the home is sold shortly after acquisition.

What about property taxes and transfer costs?

There are some costs associated with owning any home. For example, property taxes in Guelph are approximately 1% of the assessed value of the property, so assume that taxes will be about $5,500 annually. (see official wording on ticket and brochure).

Why is the $ value of this year’s home slightly less than last year?

From year to year a combination of factors can reduce or increase the cost of building a house in Guelph. Quality has not been compromised. This year’s home contains all of those special features which everyone looks for, including a full set of high quality appliances, premium finishes, many extra details both inside and out.

Why can’t my friends and I buy tickets at the 3 for $250 rate, with our own names on each ticket?

The rules, as agreed with the Ontario Lottery Commission, are that tickets sold as a Three Pack must each be registered in the same name and at the same address.

(pdf download)If I buy a ticket for my cousin who lives outside of Ontario can he or she win if my name is on the ticket? Sorry. According to the Ontario Lottery Commission rules this draw is for residents of Ontario only. You, as a resident of Ontario, could win the Home and gift it to your cousin. Check tax implications regarding capital gains first.

Why can’t you give a tax receipt if the money raised goes to charity?

Although The Rotary Club of Guelph is a registered charity, purchase of a lottery ticket is not considered a donation.

I can’t remember my phone number or address, so can I just fill out the ticket application now, pay you and let you know later?

It is Rotary’s responsibility to make sure that purchasers of Dream Home tickets can be contacted if they win, without this information you jeopardize your chances.

Can a group of people buy one ticket or a 3 for $250 together?

Yes. It is wise, however, to consider drafting a legally binding agreement that states who will share in the winnings and how the winnings will be divided. Though this may seem overly legalistic to a group of friends, review the sample agreement below.
